The hike of Jebel Toubkal is the most famous walk in the High Atlas. The views are magnificent. The course is clear and-outside winter-effectively accomplished without mountaineering background or a guide. However, it ought not be messed with as the trek up the scree slope is hard; trekkers can be struck down with altitude sickness and the mountain’s atmosphere can be extreme.
The trek will be bolstered by a Berber group; Mountain guide, cook and muleteers and donkeys for bags.
The evenings will be spent in the gites (Berber homes) and mountain cabins on the most recent 2 days.
We leave Marrakech early, driving southwards through the Moulay Brahim canyon and upper valleys to arrive at the higher valleys to arrive at higher foothills of the western High Atlas Mountains and our trailhead of Imi oughlad (1450m) with the jbel Toubkal 4167m, Aglzim 3650m and Aksoual 3847m, approaching before us. Here, in Imi oughlad, we meet with our muleteer group. We set off for a 2hour acclimatization hike, passing by cornfields woods pine and juniper to the tiz n’tachete (2000m), where we will stop and look down on the Imlil and Ait oussaden valleys before proceeding for another thirty minutes to Imi n’ifri and our field picnic. Afterwards, we walk south-west for around 2 hours and a half to assif n’ ait oussaden and the red mud terraced village of tiziane (1750 m) where we either camp or cabin the night in a gite.
Our morning hike takes us up along the Assif n’ait oussaden valley, passing through the walnut groves, up to Tizi n’taghrhourte (1995m), then finally to Assaka spring, where we will stop for our picnic break following 2 hours and a half relatively easy walking. Our evening’s hike brings us down along the edges of the woods until the point when we achieve the Berber village of D’knt (1870m) or Agouns n Assoul where we eat and rest in a bivouac or gite.
We hike up through groves of walnut trees, fields of corn and barley. We may have a chance to see some Berber peoples working in the fields. We navigate the Tizi n’Tagdalte, diving among the juniper trees till we go to a little spring set, where we enjoy a break for our picnic. After that, we leave for a little stream toward the start of the valley of Assif n’Ait Oussaden, from where we enter the village of Tizi Oussem (1850m) and walk to the Tamsoult village for our camp or gite. The entire trip takes about 6hours.
After breakfast, we now set out eastwards on a quite difficult walk to the Tizi Aguelzim (3550m), at that point we have a further 3 hours south-east to the Toubkal Refuge at 3207m, where we lodge the night.
We set out around 6 am to reach, following a three hours steep climb, the most elevated peak in the Maghreb (4167m). The views from here are just appealing. After a break on the top, we have a direct 2 to 3 hours drop back to the Refuge for a cookout. From that point forward, we set off towards the north along steeply slipping, crisscrossing trails of the higher slopes of the Valley of the Assif n’Isouhouanem n’Ouagounss towards the Shrine of Sidi Chamharouch. We set next to a stunning little waterfall to take a rest, then we hike an additional 2 hours downhill to get to the village of Imlil, from where we take the taxi back to Marrakech.
